Release Notes — Internal Testers
Under the Hood
A significant amount of work in Beta 2 went into making the app run better in the background — smoother, lighter on the battery, and less likely to get killed by Android when it is doing its job. None of this shows up on a screen, but you will feel it.
Main Thread Offloading
File reads, database writes, and network operations have been moved off the main thread. The app stays responsive while background data processing is happening — no more brief freezes when a new reading arrives.
Memory Usage
Declared largeHeap in the app manifest. This gives GlucoGlance access to a larger memory pool, which reduces the frequency of out-of-memory crashes during heavy logging periods — particularly during active bolus tracking when IOB, COB, and glucose logs are all updating simultaneously.
Glucose and IOB Log Read Optimizations
The glucose history reader was updated to pull from the correct primary log files, matching the same source used by the home screen. The IOB graph reader was updated to use timestamp-based positioning instead of index-based positioning, which means dense IOB activity during a meal or correction no longer causes data to be dropped or misaligned on the graph.
Data Flow Improvements
Several improvements to how data moves between the phone, the watch, and the database.
• COB Calculation on Phone. COB (Carbs on Board) is now calculated on the phone and pushed to the watch in real time.
• Carb Duration Sync. Carb action duration setting is now pushed to the watch so COB decay on watch faces and complications matches your phone settings.
• Glucose History. Glucose history sent to the watch has been expanded from 3 hours to 24 hours.
• IOB History. IOB history sent to the watch has been expanded from 3 hours to 24 hours.
• Mobile Battery Persistence. Mobile battery level now persists across watch process restarts — the watch no longer shows a stale battery reading after reconnecting.
Companion App Integration
GlucoGlance now receives real-time glucose data from third-party companion apps running on the same phone. Users who run multiple CGM apps simultaneously can see all readings side by side on the home screen.
Supported Companion Apps
• GlucoDataHandler (GDH)
• Juggluco
• xDrip+
Each companion app appears as its own card on the home screen, displaying glucose value, trend, delta, timestamp, and TIR — identical in layout to the primary CGM card.
How It Works
GDH and Juggluco deliver readings via real-time broadcast — GlucoGlance receives data the moment these apps have a new reading, with no polling delay. xDrip+ is polled via its local HTTP API on the same 5-minute cadence as the sensor.
IOB Handling
If an Omnipod 5 pump is installed, IOB from companion apps is ignored — the pump owns IOB. If no pump is present, IOB from GDH or xDrip+ is routed to the insulin card.
Duplicate Protection
Each companion source has an independent duplicate gate. Only one entry per reading cycle is written to the database, regardless of how many times the source broadcasts.
Timestamp Accuracy
All companion timestamps are now anchored to the sensor reading time — when the sensor generated the reading — rather than the delivery time. This keeps companion timestamps consistent with the primary CGM source.
Pod Setup & Reconnect Dialog — New in Beta 2
When a new Omnipod 5 pod is started, launch the Pod Setup dialog directly from the main menu drawer. Everything needed to begin tracking insulin delivery, placement history, and adaptive insulin sensitivity is captured in a single workflow.
Insertion Site Selector The dialog includes an interactive body diagram with front and back views. Tap any zone to select your insertion site — Left/Right Abdomen, Left/Right Thigh, Left/Right Flank, Left/Right Lower Back, or Left/Right Arm. The view flips between front and back with a single button tap and your selection is highlighted visually on the diagram.
What Gets Captured
- Pod ID — auto-incremented from the previous pod, editable
- Insulin units loaded into the pod
- Insertion site from the body diagram
- Pod start timestamp — recorded automatically at confirmation
What Gets Tracked Per Pod Session
Once confirmed, GlucoGlance begins tracking everything tied to this specific pod session:
- Daily insulin consumption — basal and bolus split
- Cumulative insulin delivered over the pod lifetime
- Bolus classification — Meal, Correction, or Combination
- Adaptive ISF — real-world insulin sensitivity measured from actual glucose drops after confirmed boluses, averaged across the pod session
- Placement site correlation — enabling future analysis of how insertion site affects insulin absorption
All session data is available in the Insulin Metrics card and exportable via the Pump Log CSV export from the drawer menu.
Insulin Metrics Card — New in Beta 2
The Insulin Metrics card is a comprehensive insulin dashboard on the home screen. All sections update in real time from background data — no interaction required.
Live Insulin & Carbs
Shows current IOB (Insulin on Board) and COB (Carbs on Board) calculated live from the pump data stream.
Daily Totals
Total daily insulin with a date navigator to review any past day. Values are broken down into Basal, Meal bolus, Correction bolus, and Total bolus, with a pie chart showing the split visually. Today’s values update continuously; past days are saved as daily snapshots.
Pod Information
Shows the active pod’s ID, start time, expiry time, and insertion site. The insulin level remaining is shown as a visual gauge that depletes in real time based on basal rate and bolus delivery.
Sensitivity
Displays your Fixed ISF (from settings) alongside your Adaptive ISF — the real-world insulin sensitivity measured automatically by GlucoGlance during this pod session. Adaptive ISF is calculated from actual glucose drops observed after confirmed bolus events and requires a minimum of 2 measurements before a value is shown.
Variance Metrics
Shows current bolus state (Meal, Correction, or Combination) and Settings Confidence — a TIR-based indicator of how well your current insulin settings are performing.
Wear OS Complications
The entire complication layer has been rebuilt for Beta 2. This touches every complication in the app.
Why This Matters for Beta Testers
GlucoGlance is built on a principle of vertical integration — we control both the data source (the complications) and the display (the watch faces). This is a significant advantage over other diabetes apps that rely on third-party complications with no control over what data is exposed or how it is formatted.
What This Means for Watch Face Design
As a watch face publisher, this overhaul directly expands the design palette. Every complication slot on every face can now be assigned a GlucoGlance complication with confidence that it will render correctly and consistently.
The new complication types mean a single slot can now display:
- A glucose range arc (RANGED_VALUE)
- A colored band scale showing range position (WEIGHTED_ELEMENTS)
- A full glucose graph with IOB overlay (SMALL_IMAGE)
- A combined glucose + insulin status card (SHORT/LONG TEXT)
No other diabetes app on Wear OS provides this combination of types from a single data source. Because we own both the complication provider and the watch face, we can design faces that use these types in ways that are specifically optimized for diabetic monitoring — something impossible when relying on a third-party data source.
Architecture Change
All complications migrated color ramps to MonochromaticImage with colored icon sets. This fixes the disappearing complication issue reported in Beta 1.
New Complication Types
Every existing complication now supports additional types where applicable. RANGED_VALUE added to IOB, COB, Last Bolus, Glucose Elapsed, Followers 1 & 2, and the Glucose WE complication. WEIGHTED_ELEMENTS added to the TIR complication.
New Complications
• COB (Carbs on Board) — standalone carb decay complication with colored icon
• IOB & COB Combined — shows both values in one slot
• GG Glucose Chart — 450×450 bitmap graph with 5 time windows (1h, 3h, 6h, 12h, 24h) via onTap
• GG Glucose Strip — 450×150 bitmap graph with the same 5 time windows via onTap
Glucose Combination Complication
Completely rewritten with 4 onTap states combining glucose range band visualization with insulin context. Supports WEIGHTED_ELEMENTS, RANGED_VALUE, SHORT_TEXT, and LONG_TEXT.
• State 0 — Glucose + IOB
• State 1 — IOB value
• State 2 — Last Bolus
• State 3 — COB
TIR Complication
Now supports 7 time windows via onTap (1h, 3h, 24h, 7d, 30d, 60d, 90d) and adds WEIGHTED_ELEMENTS type showing a 3-band color scale (red/yellow/green) with the active band highlighted.
Graph Complications
• 24 hours of glucose and IOB history now pushed from phone to watch
• IOB overlay shown automatically when data is available
• Dynamic hour label frequency (every 1, 2, 3, or 6 hours) based on time window
• Window label shown top center of graph (1h, 3h, 6h, 12h, 24h)
Insulin Status Complication
Expanded from 5 to 7 onTap states:
• State 0 — IOB + Last Bolus
• State 1 — IOB + Time
• State 2 — Last Bolus
• State 3 — COB
• State 4 — IOB & COB
• State 5 — Correction Bolus (when active)
• State 6 — Excess Carbs (when active)
